           &nbs= p;   =20 The start of October = marks the=20 end of the Fall Baseball season. =20 October 1^st finds the Baseball Hornets finishing = their=20 season at home against NEVC.

           &nbs= p;      =20 The Junior High School girls and boys basketball season = starts in=20 October. Both teams = open=20 their seasons on the road against Ballard October 2^nd = at=20 6:00. GO JUNIOR = HIGH=20 HORNETS! =20

           &nbs= p;      =20 The High School Volleyball team goes into full swing during = October=20 and they even have their district tournament in Liberal October=20 26^th through October 28^th. We are sure hoping that = will not=20 be the end to their season and the girls continue their successful = season=20 past district play. GO LADY HORNETS!

           &nbs= p;      =20 One of the Hume RVIII biggest events is coming up early in = October;=20 of course I am referring to the PTO School Carnival. The PTO Carnival is = October=20 9^th and starts at 6:00.

           &nbs= p;      =20 I=92m sure a fun time will be had by all that=20 attend.

           &nbs= p;      =20 The next topic concerns a big day in November. We should thank our = veterans=20 everyday for our freedoms, but Veteran=92s Day is November = 11^th=20 and we plan to recognize our veterans on Veteran=92s Day at 2:00 = in the=20 gym. If you are a = veteran,=20 have a veteran in your family, or know a veteran to invite, please = help us=20 to have a nice crowd of veterans to recognize. May God bless our=20 Veterans.

           &nbs= p;      =20 Halloween=20 falls on Saturday this year, so our Halloween activities will be = held on=20 Friday

           &nbs= p;      =20 Missouri Commissioner of Education sent an email with the = following=20 paragraph:

           &nbs= p;      =20 =93Please follow the guidance of health care professionals = and=20 re-admit students 24 hours after=20 their fever subsides while not on fever-reducing medication. We urge you to suspend = policies=20 requiring a note.=94 = We are=20 planning on accepting parent notes and phone calls regarding = students=20 absences and are taking a serious look at the current attendance=20 policy. =20

Amendments to the October=20 Newsletter

           &nbs= p;      =20 Thank you Margaret Sears for noticing Parent/Teacher = Conferences=20 were omitted from the October Newsletter and the October=20 Calendar.

           &nbs= p;      =20 Parent/Teacher Conferences are October 22 from 2:00 pm = until 7:00=20 pm. On that date = school will=20 dismiss at 12:45. = The=20 following day, Friday October 23^rd, will be an early = dismissal=20 at 12:45.

           &nbs= p;      =20 Another omission from both the Newsletter and Calendar was = the=20 10^th Grade sponsored Faculty/Staff vs Student = Basketball=20 Games.   There = will be=20 two games, one male and one female. The games will begin at = 5:30.    =20

FIRST GRADE NEWS

First Grade has started off nicely. We are doing great when = it comes=20 to the Accelerated Reading board. =20 We already have Braxton in the 20 point club. Great job kids keep = reading! Everyone has been excited = this year=20 to read books and to test over them. =20

The=20 children really enjoyed having their grandparents come to visit = with them=20 for Grandparents Day. =20 Everyone enjoyed the cookies and tea. Thank you to those =

grandparents who attended. We really do appreciate = everything=20 you do for your grandchildren. =20

Looking ahead we are excited about Carnival = coming up=20 on October 9^th. = Our booth will have the games fishing and limbo. Our Carnival candidates = are=20 Braxton and Brayelnn. = Please=20 come and have fun and vote for your favorite candidate.

Halloween is coming up and we have already = decorated=20 our classroom. = Don=92t forget=20 that we will be having a Halloween Parade here at school on Oct.=20 30^th.

Get the=20 FACS

The Career and = Family=20 Leadership class is completing a unit on advertising. They are discovering all = the=20 careers that are possible in this area. They are currently = working on a=20 commercial that they will show to the class.

         =20 The Advanced Foods class is finishing up the unit in=20 nutrition. They = will be=20 making a pamphlet on the details of a nutrient of their = choice.

         =20 Advanced Child Development is currently in a unit covering = infant=20 nutrition. They = have mad=20 homemade baby food and compared the ingredients, cost and taste of = each.

       =20 The Personal Finance class is a large class and so = we have=20 made up interview questions and interviewed classmates to find the = best=20 person for the job. = We have=20 also created cover letters, resumes, and thank you letters.
         =20 We have been very busy in the 8^th grade class = FACS. They are currently = making=20

aprons. It=20 has been a challenge for all because we have six sewing machines = and=20 nineteen students. = They=20 are working very well. They are in three groups = and these=20 groups rotate daily. = The=20 groups are sewing machine, hand sewing and designing clothes. I hope to have all the = aprons made=20 in a couple of weeks.

         =20 Nutrition and Wellness class is very busy into the = nutrients and=20 how each one of them helps your body. They are learning about = the=20 purpose of each one nutrient, good food sources and deficiencies = of=20 each. The class = seems to be=20 very interested in learning this information.
         =20 Study Skills is learning that planning and keeping track of = homework assignments is important to their grade. =20

Title I=20 Math

         =20 October already! I can hardly believe that we are nearing = the end=20 of the 1st Quarter. In Title I this year we are trying something = new. Many=20 of the kids have practiced math fact fluency with the Rocket Math = program=20 in the past, but this year all students in 1st-5th grades = are=20 working on fact fluency for 15-20 minutes every day. Students in 1st-3rd = grades began=20 with addition and will move on to subtraction and later in the = year=20 multiplication, while 4th and 5th graders are jumping right in = with=20 multiplication and will then develop fluency with division. The = students=20 practice orally with a partner, take a timed test (ranging from = 1-2=20 mins.), and then grade their own test so=20

Reading Tips for the=20 Month

=B7           = ;        =20 Reading is a skill and it = gets better=20 with practice.

=B7           = ;        =20 Read aloud to your = child (they=20 will remember 10 mins. spent cuddled with you reading a book more = than 2=20 hours of television).

=B7           = ;        =20 Stop before the end = of the=20 story--ask what they think will happen next.

=B7           = ;        =20 If reading a = repetitive story,=20 encourage your child to chime in on the parts they know/guess the = next=20 rhyming word.

Third Grade News

Happy = October from=20 the 3^rd Grade! =20 This month we will be finishing up a unit on adding greater = numbers=20 in math and start another on subtracting numbers. In reading our next = theme is=20 Celebrating Traditions. = We=20 will be reading about kids that have different traditions they = share with=20 their families and comparing/contrasting them to traditions that = they=20 have. We have = started looking=20 at writing a personal narrative, and will continue to improve on=20 them. In science we = are=20 looking at animals and environments. =20 Finally, for Social Studies we are still studying different = types=20 of communities.

Characterplus

Characterplus- Septemeber was show RESPECT = month. At the Characterplus
Assembly on September 30, we honored our = birthdays for August and
September. We also had students of the Month = who the teachers really saw
showing RESPECT. These students were Talli = Madison, Makinzi Harris, Jaylyn
Rogers, Raygen Spencer, Emmah Fillpot, Daryan = Herring, Sierra King, Grant
Swickhammer, Jenna Leighty, Tori Sears, Colt = Regers, Lena Loyd, and
Jonathon = Hyder.

We also introduced our ambassadors for this school year. They are = Katie
Orear, = Lena Loyd, Mackenzie Hale, Sara Wikoff, Makenna Thompson, = Bobby
Berry, = Emily Brooks, and Derek Sutcliffe.

The Poster for Respect winners are: = 3rd-Kindergarten, 2nd-Second Grade,
1st-Fifth Grade; 3rd-Tenth Grade, 2nd-Eighth = Grade, 1st-Seniors.

Congratulations to everyone for showing = RESPECT in September, may it
follow you through out = life.
